Event Details
Bay Area PiAers,
Join us on Wednesday, March 13th for a presentation followed by a firseside chat on the Altai Republic by a friend of PiA and expert in the Altai culture, Dinara Matina. The event will be graciously hosted by Silk Road House in Berkeley- the Bay Area's center for all matters Central & Inner Asia.
This will be a great opportunity to learn about the Altai Republic and Central Asia. And, if you are not yet curious, consider these interesting facts!
- The Altai region is called the "four corners" because it is split between Russia, Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan
- Altai's wrestle on horseback and play some sort of polo/rugby on horseback where the ball is a 60 lbs goat carcass
- This Siberian Ice Maiden was found in a burial site (called a Kurgan) in one of the valleys and it made a lot of waves within the indigenous communities. There were tons of superstitions going around about her removal from Altai (things about how the archaeologists who excavated and took her away all died in a helicopter crash), and strong lobbying ended up bringing her back to Altai
